Biography
When Radiohead came along, everyone said they sounded like REM. It pissed them off. They proved otherwise. When Muse came along, everyone said they sounded like Radiohead. It pissed them off. They proved otherwise. When Fear Of Music came along, everyone said they sounded like Muse. See how this works? And the chain goes back from REM to the birth of rock’n’roll.
But rather than a lineage of influence, it’s a lineage of Greatness. And Fear Of Music – coming your way this year – have everything in place to achieve the very same. This is their story.
Fear Of Music are Jo Rose (vocals/guitar), Ali Esmaail (bass), Mike Ward (guitar) and Rick Morgan (drums). They formed as schoolfriends, took their name from a seminal Talking Heads album, and together, they’re out to give British rock its soul and spirit back, and power up their hometown of Manchester with some rocket-fuel riffs.
With the spirit of The Smashing Pumpkins, the screech of Placebo, the scale of Muse and the conscience of Manic Street Preachers, but also the grace of Jeff Buckley and the hysteria of Pixies, Fear Of Music mine a virgin sound all of their own.
You might have heard of Fear Of Music before, from the huge noise they made coming out of Manchester’s seminal Blowout nights, when their early gigs and demo recordings let the genie out of the bottle sooner than anyone could have guessed. Over three EPs, ‘Fear Of Music’ and ‘Fast Faster Fastest’ and ‘We Are Not the Enemy’, they built up an organic, devoted fanbase and everything was set for them to be Britrock’s great new hope.
Jo Rose- Sings, Guitars, Keys
Ali Esmaail- Bass
Mike Ward- Guitars
Rick Morgan - Drums

19 Mar, 2008 - Blowout Gig Moved
The Blowout gig this Friday in Manchester has been moved to next Friday due to things beyond our control. We apologise if this causes problems for anybody.
Hi - first of all, the bulletin I just posted, in case you missed it -
Hi people. The Blowout gig this Friday in Manchester has been moved to next Friday due to things beyond our control. We apologise if this causes problems for anybody.
So to clarify, Fear of Music are playing Blowout at the Irish Club in Chorlton on Friday 28th March - NOT on Friday 21st March. If anything else changes then we’ll tell y’all immediately.
I’m gonna stick a blog up in a minute and all, keep your eyes peeled.
See y’all on the 28th
Ciao
Mike
That’s business out of the way then. Next week we’re gonna have a whole lotta cameras pointed at us, which will presumable suck our very souls right out of our bodies, bit by bit. You’ll see the results of all this photographic and videographic tomfoolery fairly soon, in the shape of some sexy photographs, and an equally sexy music video for our forthcoming single (that’s right, FORTHCOMING SINGLE) First To Go. How exciting.
So yeah, everything’s rocking and rolling, basically. Keep your ear to the ground and there should be much more exciting news coming your way in the coming weeks and months. At the moment we’re looking at May 12th or 19th for releasing the first single - as soon as something gets confirmed we’ll let y’all know.
Awesome
Seeyah soon!

Mike here. I'm trying to put off going to bed tonight for as long as possible, so here are my personal votes for tomorrow's NME awards, based on the existing nominations (http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/music/newsid_7215000/7215463.stm)
Best British Band - Klaxons, based on From Atlantis to Interzone and Magik, not on Golden Skans and It's Not Over
Best International Band - Arcade Fire
Best New Band - Errm, I haven't heard any of their albums. I saw the Wombats ages ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I'll choose them. Foals are pretty good too, mind, runners up.
Best Live Band - I haven't seen any of these bands in the last 12 months (except on TV, which doesn't count), but I've seen the Monkeys and Muse before, and they were both very good. I'll say Muse.
Best Solo Artist - Tough one, none of them is jaw droppingly awesome, but they're all pretty good. I'll be controversial and go with Kate Nash.
Best Album - Klaxons and Radiohead are the only ones I've properly listened to. Radiohead, I suppose.
Best track - Weirdly enough I'm gonna say Men's Needs by the Cribs. Bloc Party are close runners up with Flux, mind.
Best Video - These videos are all a bit rubbish. Teddy Picker by the Monkeys is the least rubbish. Teenagers by MCR is the second least rubbish.
Best Dancefloor Filler - I haven't really been on a dancefloor in the past 12 months, but I imagine that D.A.N.C.E by Justice would be the most likely of these tracks to get me shakin' my ass. Having said that, From Atlantis to Interzone is a better song in general, and I suppose I could dance to it in a scary kinda way. Alright, Klaxons have it.
Best Music DVD - Unplugged in New York by Nirvana. It's the only of these I've actually seen, but it'd probably still win if I'd seen all the others.
Best Live Event - Glastonbury wins by default, it's the only one I went to.
Hero of the Year - What a stupid category. Thom Yorke.
Villain of the Year - Again. Err, George Dubya
Best Dressed - Jesus. I really don't care. Umm, Alex Turner.
Worst Dressed - Again with the not caring. Mika.
Best Album Artwork - Manics, Send Away the Tigers
Best Radio Show - Russell Brand (Radio 2)
Worst Album - I haven't heard any of them, but imagine it would be Life in Cartoon Motion by Mika.
Worst Band - 30 Seconds to Mars
Best TV Show - Skins
Best Film - Control. Honourable mention must go to Superbad as well. Break yoself, fool!
Sexiest Man - It's gotta be Julian Barratt. During the last year though I have seen both Nicky Wire and Patrick Wolf up close and in the flesh, and they're both pretty damn sexy too.
Sexiest Woman - Kylie, of course.
Best Venue - I'll say Glasgow Barrowlands, just because it's the only one I've visited in the past 12 months. It was cool.
Best Website - YouTube
Best Band Blog - Fear of...whaddya mean we're not nominated? Fine then, Radiohead.
Best Music Blog - None of these mean anything to me. I'll go with Stereogum, as it has the best name.
Best British Band - Klaxons, based on From Atlantis to Interzone and Magik, not on Golden Skans and It's Not Over

20 Feb, 2008 - Hello hello hello
Alright, no more messin' around. The album's been mastered, it's in the bag, the singles are lined up and ready to go, and FoM are ready to finally get cracking.
Alright, no more messin' around. The album's been mastered, it's in the bag, the singles are lined up and ready to go, and FoM are ready to finally get cracking. We've got a few gigs lined up, which you'll find right here on our MySpace page. It's mainly small venues, supporting local bands and that kinda thing, to get us warmed up for the rest of the year ahead. Expect to see more dates popping up over the coming weeks, as we'll be getting very busy indeed. It's been very frustating being so inactive over the past couple of years, but it really does look like the time is upon us. I know I've said this sort of thing before, so I don't expect you to believe me, but do keep an eye on this here MySpace for all manner of exciting happenings.
We're hopefully looking at some time in May for the first single (which'll be First to Go, you can listen to it here on le MySpace) - hopefully we'll be able to give you a proper, confirmed release date soon, as well as a better idea of when the next single and the album'll be out. With the first single out in May and the album some time in the summer, we've got plenty of time to a) put the finishing touches to the songs in the practice room, b) engage in all manner of promotional tomfoolery in order to put the word out that, oh yes FoM are coming at ya (in a Cleopatra stylee...anyone? No? Ah well...) and of course, c) travel the length and breadth of the land performing for all you good, good people.
It's gonna be awesome.
Woop!
